February 6, 2017 - Mouser Electronics, the New Product Introduction (NPI) leader that empowers innovation, continues its investment in future engineers by awarding a series of grants to Mansfield (Texas) high schools to enhance science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. The Mansfield Independent School District (MISD) Education Foundation will use the Building Understanding and Community Brick by Brick grant to buy MIT Edgerton Center Molecule Sets and LEGO® kits for makerspaces in the libraries at six high schools in Mansfield, home to Mouser's worldwide headquarters.
"This STEM-based project will benefit hundreds of local students," said Kevin Hess, Mouser's Senior Vice President of Marketing. "From our founding, education has played a large part in Mouser's involvement in our community. We are happy to help foster and encourage a new generation of engineers and scientists in our own community."
The MISD Education Foundation will use the grant funds to continue building and expanding the makerspaces in Mansfield high school libraries, where students can design, prototype and create projects using shared tools in a co-working area. In addition to the Molecule Sets, which help instructors teach science concepts using lesson plans and color-coded LEGO bricks, the makerspaces will offer other LEGO kits to give students the freedom to explore, create, and develop critical thinking skills.
Each semester, Mouser contributes to the MISD Education Foundation by providing grant funding for teachers and students. In past years, funds have been used to provide robotic kits that let students develop essential skills for success in the 21st century, allowing them to build, program and test their solutions based on real-life robotics technology.
"The Mansfield ISD Education Foundation is grateful to Mouser Electronics for once again taking the lead in a STEM initiative that will promote a higher level of education in our schools," said Linda Bacsik, Executive Director of the Foundation. "We hope that other companies follow Mouser's example in partnering with us to improve education in our community."
