Würth Elektronik REDEXPERT AC Loss Tool

Würth Elektronik REDEXPERT is an online software tool that simulates power inductors for precision comparison. This easy-to-use software solution enables users to select power inductors to calculate complete AC losses. REDEXPERT's precision is derived and validated from measurements of the power inductors in a switching controller setup rather than on the known Steinmetz models with sinusoidal excitation.

The losses determined with REDEXPERT are based on current and voltage waveforms typical in applications. Besides the core and winding losses, Wurth Electronics also includes the losses arising from the specific geometries of the inductance, such as the air gap.

Particular highlights of the REDEXPERT AC loss model are the range of duty cycles supported from 10 percent to 90 percent and the switching frequency range of 10kHz to 10MHz. This gives the REDEXPERT AC loss model a previously unattained precision.

Features

  • AC Loss calculation
    • Based on real-time application setup and measurements
    • AC loss is caused by flux swing with respect to time-in-core and windings
    • DC loss is the copper loss in the windings
    • A pulsating input voltage is applied over the inductor
    • The input and output power is measured
    • (Pin – Pout) is the power loss in the inductor
    • Repeated over a wide range of parameters, including the variation of peak flux density swing to produce empirical data
    • Empirical data used to create an equation to calculate AC loss
  • PAC = ʃ(∆I, freq,DC,k1,k2)
    • Accurate over a wide range of frequencies (10kHz to 10MHz)
    • Considers even small changes in the core material and winding structure
    • Valid for components, which use more than one material
    • Accurately estimates losses of iron powder and metal alloy materials
    • Valid for any shape and structure
    • Includes AC winding losses
    • Constantly improving and adding new data based on customer feedback
